Evergreens are so integral to northern gardens, where winters can
last five months or longer, that I often apply them first to a new
landscape plan. Only after there are sufficient evergreens do
deciduous plants receive consideration.
I repeatedly recommend a few favorites to area gardeners.
Different applications make them look as fresh in one garden as they
do in another.
In other words, mix them up, vary their uses and companions, and
special varieties won't ever look tired or overused.
That said, I truly appreciate a wide palette of conifers and
haven't met many I don't like. Rarely, however, will I recommend
