The Town Board will be asked at its Dec. 17 meeting to consider
creating an eight-member independent board to oversee the operation
of the Big Bend-Vernon Volunteer Fire Department.
Creating a Fire Department board was one of the central
recommendations of an independent study completed last month by
Almont Associates Inc., consultants on fire department operations.
The $5,000 report suggested that political discord was at the
heart of the problems in the department and recommended that at the
least, the communities consider hiring a mediator to resolve
disagreements over the Fire Department.
