Resembling a fleet of flying saucers or a giant set of stainless
steel curling stones an interactive "temple" to pop music is about
to open in this city in northeast England.
The $24 million National Center for Popular Music in Sheffield,
which will open to the public March 1, is like the London Science
Museum-meets-MTV. Thinking of tinkering with the vocals of Garbage's
Shirley Manson? Producing a video of Phil Collins live in Paris?
The center has the gadgetry to do it.
Inside the building's four "drums," different have-a-try-at-it
exhibits explore various aspects of pop. One "drum," Soundscapes,
has a surround-sound auditorium featuring a high-tech music and light
