Music teachers at Brown Deer Middle School are not yet ready to sing the blues. But with so much of the public's attention resting on the value of tough math and science requirements, they and their students are ready to beat the drum for music education.

"There is much research out there to show these kids score high in college entrance exams," said Danielle Boor, the school's band teacher.

While some of that may be the result of bright kids gravitating toward music, Boor thinks there is something special about music that helps students manage their time.
