This used to be the National Hockey League's high-rent district,
the summer and winter home of the Stanley Cup. Steve Yzerman and
the Detroit Red Wings live here. Peter Forsberg and the Colorado
Avalanche play here.
But things have become more than a little run-down in the Western
Conference these days. In fact, take away Detroit, the Dallas Stars
and the Phoenix Coyotes and the rest of the West looks like a trailer
park after a tornado has blown through it.
Ten of the West's 13 teams have a losing record, compared with
only six of the 14 teams in the Eastern Conference. Colorado is a
