The debate on deer baiting is off and running, as the State's Assembly Natural Resources Committee held a public hearing last week in Stevens Point to obtain comments on a proposal that would ban hunting deer with the aid of bait.

A total of 38 people registered in support of the proposed ban Wednesday, 26 registered in opposition and three registered for information only.

The hearing solicited comments on committee chairman DuWayne Johnsrud's (R-Eastman) Assembly Bill 225, which would prohibit the use of bait for the purpose of hunting deer unless the bait is plant matter that is left or deposited as part of farming practices or unless the bait is commercially manufactured and weighs ...
