Americans in droves are swapping their bagels for bacon, as high-protein diets sweep the nation.

Since 1996, three diet books espousing high-protein eating plans have been on The New York Times bestseller list for an astounding 75 weeks combined.

The diets "Enter the Zone," "Sugar Busters!" and "Protein Power" along with other popular diets such as "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution," operate on the same basic principle: Carbohydrates are bad and protein is good when it comes to losing fat.
