Whistling Straits, the links-style golf course in Haven that
opened to rave reviews last year, is a candidate to host the men's
U.S. Open, possibly as early as 2005.
"Having looked at it, I think it's definitely a candidate for the
Open," said Reed Mackenzie, a vice president of the United States
Golf Association.
"It's a wonderful place."
Mackenzie said at least four of the eight members of the USGA's
Championship Committee, which is responsible for site selection for
the Open, have visited Whistling Straits since it opened in July
1998.
Mackenzie walked the course June 6 with Trey Holland, the chairman
of the Championship Committee and next in line to become president of
the USGA.
