The Milwaukee Brewers' statistics sheet indicates that Mark Loretta is in a batting slump.

Jim Lefebvre would rather believe his own eyes.

Lefebvre, the Brewers' energetic hitting coach, has been trying to convince Loretta in recent weeks that he's swinging the bat just fine. In light of overwhelming numerical evidence to the contrary, Lefebvre realizes there is room for skepticism. "He went through a stretch where he was hitting two or three balls every night on the button, yet he would go 0 for 4," said Lefebvre. "Then people would say, `He's not hitting the ball.' In my eyes, he is hitting the ball."
