Wisconsin consumer protection officials are cautioning credit card
users about a scam involving telemarketers claiming to protect
credit cards from Y2K glitches.
Some companies selling credit card protection insurance, which is
legal, are using questionable tactics to scare people into buying the
insurance, said Glen Loyd, a spokesman for the Wisconsin Department
of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
Some of the callers are con artists trying to steal credit card
information. They claim to "fix" credit card accounts for the year
2000, but such fixes are not necessary.
"We get about one complaint a day on these companies," Loyd said
