Happy surprises from an inexpensive compact car are nearly as rare
as an HMO quickly and efficiently handling your medical bills.
But Mazda's new Protege LX was full of pleasant surprises from gas
mileage to seating to quietness to price.
It had been four years since I'd plunked my tush into a Protege
and, to be honest, I had happily avoided the car because my last
drive had been a real pain in the well, let's just say I didn't
care for its horribly hard seats.
Forget that old criticism. The new Protege's seats are firm but
comfortable, with good lateral support for the back and two easily
turned knobs to adjust the bottom cushion's height and angle. On
