A last-ditch treatment that's often attempted when a patient is
at death's door a double-lung transplant is saving the lives of a
growing number of Wisconsinites with cystic fibrosis, a disease that
usually kills by age 30.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison has done 23 such transplants,
and Medical College of Wisconsin surgeons at Froedtert Memorial
Lutheran Hospital have done 12. Both centers have better survival
rates than the national average.
"Our patients have enjoyed a tremendous advantage in survival,"
said Robert Love, the surgeon in charge of UW's program, who spoke
at a recent symposium on transplantation.
