One freeway's death warrant has become another's reprieve.
The same deal that cleared the way for razing most of the Park
East Freeway has ended debate on knocking down I-794, Mayor John O.
Norquist says.
As recently as last year, Norquist and City Planning Director
Peter Park were in the forefront of efforts to demolish both
downtown freeway spurs and replace them with boulevards.
But in the wake of an agreement to use federal money to help
demolish the Park East from N. 4th St. to N. Jefferson St. and
rebuild the Marquette Interchange, Norquist and Park have dropped
their effort to remove I-794, at least for now.
