Swiss billionaire industrialist and symphony conductor Paul Sacher
died Wednesday after a long illness, the pharmaceutical giant Roche
announced. He was 93.
Sacher, reportedly one of the world's richest men, and other
family members controlled Roche Holding AG and had a joint fortune
estimated at $17 billion to $20 billion.
He used his wealth to become one of the world's most influential
arts patrons and inspiration to contemporary composers. Benjamin
Britten, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky and Bela Bartok were all
proteges of Sacher.
