State officials approved plans Wednesday for a $35.8 million
justice center on the Capitol Square that will house the Department
of Justice, Supreme Court offices and the State Law Library.
Construction of the eight-story office building, which will house
about 660 employees, could begin during the summer and is expected to
be completed by July 15, 2001.
Gov. Tommy G. Thompson personally negotiated the deal, which he
said had an initial price tag of $51.8 million. Some downsizing and
haggling helped reduce the price, he said.
The facility will be built on W. Main St., directly across from
the Capitol, wrapping around the M&I Bank on vacant land the state
will purchase from the bank. ...
