Major-league umpires, apparently mistaking chest protectors for bulletproof vests, have declared war on baseball.

Good luck, fellows, but please remember to fill out that next-of-kin information. In these cases of career suicide, local food banks need to move quickly in opening accounts for family members.

This, of course, is very stupid muscle-flexing by the umpires union, a small but powerful 68-member organization that holds one-of-a-kind jobs.

Out of nowhere Wednesday, the umpires walked out of a membership meeting in Philadelphia and announced a mass resignation for Sept. 2.
