Emerald City stands as a paradox: a successful nightclub now closed because of its popularity.

The downtown nightclub -- the scene of an Aug. 8 shooting that left one man dead and his brother wounded -- joins a list of other hip-hop clubs in the area forced to consider a change in format simply because of the huge crowds they attracted. Although the club's capacity was 400, an Emerald City spokeswoman said, lines wrapped around the building on weekend nights.

The young, mostly 21- to 30-year-old crowd that patronized Emerald City says the club, which opened in 1997, simply fell victim to its popularity.
