On cool summer mornings, when the fog creeps in over the bay, you
can stand amid the ghosts of the whorehouses and the bones of the
piers and hear a disembodied, otherworldly voice talking of
long-lost, once-randy Cannery Row.
"I'm John Steinbeck," the voice says.
And you might wonder: Has he come back from the grave to buy some
overpriced souvenirs?
Actually, it's an amplified tape recording by a local radio
announcer, imitating the celebrated but deceased writer. It's
designed to rope tourists into parting with $6.95 for a "step back in
time" at the Spirit of Monterey Wax Museum.
Located on Steinbeck Plaza, just a few feet from Steinbeck's
