Ozaukee County put itself in position to have the lowest property
tax rate of all of Wisconsin's 72 counties Wednesday when the County
Board decided to use revenue from the county sales tax to lower
property taxes.
"The sales tax shifts the tax burden to the user of services,
whether they are a renter or a tourist," County Supervisor Gus Wirth
of Cedarburg said in arguing for using the tax for property tax
relief.
The vote to use the sales tax for property tax relief was 20-9.
The half-cent sales tax was enacted in 1991 to pay for
construction of the county's Justice Center, with the provision it
would go out of existence when that bill was paid. The tax was
