Thunderstorms prevented space shuttle Columbia from blasting off
early today with Eileen Collins, the first woman to lead a U.S.
spaceflight.
It was the second launch delay this week.
Lightning flashed offshore and thunder rumbled as NASA held the
countdown at the five-minute mark in hopes the storms would pass by
quickly.
The launch director even added 10 minutes to the launch window,
but it didn't help. He waited until the last possible moment before
radioing the bad news to Collins and her crew: They would not be
lifting off today with the world's most powerful X-ray telescope.
A new launch date was not immediately announced, but it was
expected NASA would try again early Friday.
