As major-league baseball prepares to replace at least 22 umpires
by Sept. 2 and the rift within the umpiring ranks continues to
expand, things could get ugly over the remaining two months of the
season.

most evident -- on the field or in the umpires' dressing room?

existing umpires, there is certain to be conflict. It was the
willingness of the replacements, all from the minor leagues, to sign
contracts that led to the collapse of the union strategy of mass
resignations.
