City officials are considering supplying their own Fire Department
paramedics as they haggle with South Milwaukee over the cost of
paramedic services provided by the neighboring city.
St. Francis City Administrator Ralph Voltner said the city is
negotiating with Milwaukee County over retraining its emergency
medical technicians so they can handle tasks now performed by
paramedics.
"The decision hasn't been made yet," Voltner said. "The fat lady
hasn't sung yet, but we're leaning toward doing that (retraining)."
Paramedics can provide treatment that EMTs cannot. For example,
paramedics are allowed to start an IV on an accident victim, while
EMTs are not.
