Sometime, a few years ago, Saturday died. It died as a day of
leisure, of mornings in bed and afternoons lollygagging in a hammock.
Lollygagging has nothing to do with the modern Saturday.
Free of naps, daydreams and downtime, Saturday has become a
massive attack of errands, perpetual soccer games and hard-core SUV
mileage. The weekend has been slashed from two days to one.
"Saturday is still a work day," says the NPD research group's
Harry Balzer, who has been tracking 3,000 consumers for a decade.
"It's just a different kind of work."
And, generally, for no compensation.
Saturday driving time for women has increased almost 15% this
decade, according to the NPD study of adults of all races ...
