Fish caught in a Manassas pond last week were not dangerous
piranhas, a state Game and Inland Fisheries biologist has
determined. The blunt-toothed fish, called pacu, were tropical
vegetarian cousins of the South American fish and posed no threat to
people or animals.
The four pacu, which were caught in a pond on Williamson
Boulevard in Manassas, were most likely released by their owner
sometime this summer, said John Odenkirk, the state's senior
fisheries biologist. The fish were caught by two Manassas residents
early last week, both of whom believed the fish were piranhas
because they had teeth and because, the residents said, the fish
were somewhat aggressive.
