Article: Idea of animal rights stems from compassion

This is in response to "Animal rights law! What's next?" (The Morning Mail, July 5). Fred Reidenbach, the letter's author, seems to be quite uneducated and confused. An animal rights law course would not be one that fights to make sure mosquitoes and cockroaches live long, prosperous lives free of suffering, as Reidenbach seems to imagine. And vegetable rights? Come on now, that's just silly.

What Reidenbach fails to recognize is that there are animal rights causes with mass amounts of public support, from steak chefs to vegans. Have we already forgotten the fraternity incident in Madison when the son of football coach Barry Alvarez was charged with cooking
