In the aftermath of the purging of 22 umpires last week after their union's disastrous labor bluff, some of those with and without jobs pointed fingers at commissioner Bud Selig as the culprit behind the entire affair.

Those misguided umpires were pointing fingers in the wrong direction. Many of those who saved their jobs by refusing to join the mass resignation scheme know who really was to blame -- their own leader, Richie Phillips.

It was the arrogance and recklessness of Phillips that led to the loss of those jobs. Phillips persuaded a good portion of his constituency to resign, hoping to scare management to the bargaining table.
