The village has decided not to let local convenience stores to sell beer.

The 4-3 vote, which came during a Monday session of the village board, will affect five stores that would have been permitted to sell alcohol over the counter.

Village Administrator Diane Schleicher said the matter came down to "the enforcement issue."

Schleicher said some convenience stores are understaffed, and a person can have an operator's license to sell beer as young as 18.

"That's where you're going to have a chance for high incidences of underage selling," Schleicher said.

Several surrounding communities allow beer to be sold by convenience stores, Schleicher said.
