Many of Gov. George W. Bush's allies in New Hampshire are blaming his Texas-based campaign for early lapses that they say have left him unnecessarily vulnerable against Sen. John McCain in the state that holds the first presidential primary in only six weeks.

A combination of aloofness and overconfidence, they say, led advisers unfamiliar with the peculiarities of New Hampshire's politics to let Bush adopt a sound-bite style that voters here disdain -- and to forgo the time-honored approach of personal campaigning.
