The moment of truth arrived, on a serving tray. My daughter, the
grilled cheese maven, fixed her eyes on mine as her favorite lunch
was placed before her. The chirpy Bahamian waiter suggested ketchup.
Lizzie took a mouthful. I couldn't bear to watch. If the food did
not meet her exacting standards, this trip to the tropics would melt
down faster than you can say "American cheese." With one last wistful
gaze out the window at the shimmering marina, I turned to face my
daughter, who was suddenly bathed in an angelic glow.
"Dad," she said, beaming, "I ate the crust."
In 7-year-old-speak, "ate the crust" meant "four-star dining
