Article: War Memorial Center needs a lift

Santiago Calatrava's stunning addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum is far from complete. But excitement over the addition has overshadowed the once-striking piece of architecture immediately to the north, the War Memorial Center. Milwaukee must not let its Memorial Center become a poor stepsister.

Designed by another world-class architect, Eero Saarinen, the Memorial Center, umbilically attached to the Art Museum, is a landmark. Since 1957, it has sharply defined the lakefront as well as Milwaukee's gratitude to its veterans, whose sacrifices will be commemorated on Veterans Day Thursday.
