Ruth DeYoung Kohler had begun her day early, with a meeting across
town. By the time she arrived at the John Michael Kohler Arts
Center's Carriage House Cafe, she was already in full operational
mode.
Seating herself on a streamlined steel chair at a sleek, custom-
fabricated table in the reconstructed carriage house, a key element
in the arts center's newly completed expansion project, Kohler looked
around her.
What she saw was good: amiable-looking guards getting ready for an
influx of patrons, custodians dutifully sweeping already glistening
floors, preschoolers scampering about in chattering flocks.
The 4-year-olds seemed unintimidated by their airy, image-
