South Carolina defeat defines difficulty of McCain's task

Along with independents he must attract more GOP

Columbia, S.C. -- In the aftermath of his bitter loss here, the difficulty of John McCain's task has become painfully apparent.

Waging an underdog, unorthodox campaign, he is finding that his greatest strengths are his biggest weaknesses. He is in a tactical and strategic box.

His tactical dilemma goes like this:

Running on reform and character, he pledged early on to wage a "positive" campaign. The problem was what to do when attacked.
