Plymouth -- William Sagal, the first University of Wisconsin student to wear the oversized head of mascot Bucky Badger, has died at the age of 73.

Sagal died at his home Monday. There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

Sagal's vehicle sported the license plate "Bucky 1," and his collection of Bucky Badger memorabilia filled his home.

Even Gov. Tommy G. Thompson backed off the idea of using "Bucky 1" as the moniker on the state airplane after a staff member learned that Sagal had claimed the name.
