An airplane towed a sign over the suburban house where Juan Miguel Gonzalez waited for a reunion with his son: "U.S. SENDS 6-YEAR-OLD BACK TO CUBA."

So it's come to this -- the Elian Saga, a struggle over one dark- eyed, pixieish child, hyped into an aerial ad.

The noisy, surrealistic battle over Elian feels like a Cold War rerun. Slogan-chanting mobs. Polarizing, self-righteous idealogues on both sides. Media overkill. Pandering politicians.

In the Elian bedlam, there's been one sensible, calm voice. Surprise: The heroine is Attorney General Janet Reno.
