It is only Monday, but already flags are flapping to full
attention at Royal Birkdale, site of the 127th British Open, which
begins Thursday. There is a 35 mph wind billowing in off the Irish
Sea, and the sound of rattling and rolling canvas tent tops could be
heard dawn to dusk today all over the grounds.
Tom Lehman arrived Sunday night from the relative calm of an
inland European PGA Tour event in Loch Lomond, Scotland, last week.
He never had played Royal Birkdale, and the 1996 British Open
champion wanted to get a feel for the course. Shortly after 7, he
wandered out through the sand dunes with a driver, a 5-iron and a
putter in his hands, and six golf balls in his pocket.
