McCain conspicuously refuses to play role of losing candidate

It would take a brave soul to tap Arizona Sen. John McCain on the shoulder and remind him, "Uh, John, you lost. Remember? You ended your 2000 campaign after Bush waxed you in the Super Tuesday primaries."

That seems a trifling detail to McCain, a man who marches to his own drummer -- and still hears the music after the parade has passed. But McCain stubbornly refuses to act like a loser, good or bad.

He refuses to go gently into that good night of failed Arizona presidential hopefuls -- Barry Goldwater, Mo Udall, Bruce Babbitt and himself.
