New guidelines warn that all Americans -- particularly the elderly -- need to pay more attention to the first number in blood pressure readings, because it seems to be the key in determining whether a person has hypertension.

The revised recommendations on systolic blood pressure, issued by the National Institutes of Health on Thursday, represent a major shift in the way doctors will be diagnosing and treating high blood pressure.
