Disabilities found among premature babies

Study reports that half of those who survive have mental or physical problems

Half of all extremely premature babies who survive are mentally or physically disabled, a quarter of them severely so, a new study shows.

As daunting as that sounds, it is better than most experts had thought.

The lead researcher, Neil Marlow of the University of Nottingham, England, had expected to find that about 40% of such premature babies wind up with severe disabilities.

He studied all 4,004 babies born before the 26th week of pregnancy over 10 months in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
