When Milwaukee and Chicago drivers started paying more to fill their tanks, more seats started filling on many buses and trains serving those areas.

Some public transit officials believe high gas prices lured commuters out of their cars, particularly for longer suburban commutes and Milwaukee-to-Chicago trips. But not all transit systems registered ridership gains, and other factors -- from calendar quirks to Summerfest scheduling -- make it difficult to draw definitive conclusions.
