Suspected zebra mussels found in Big Cedar Lake

Divers find scattering of alien mollusks; state lab must confirm species

Town of West Bend -- Divers found about a dozen mollusks suspected of being alien zebra mussels scattered throughout Big Cedar Lake on Thursday afternoon.

The discovery confirmed fears of lake residents who organized the search and also indicated that the invading species could easily spread downstream in Cedar Creek to Little Cedar Lake, said William Genthe, chairman of the Big Cedar Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District.
