If you think one apple pie is pretty much like another, drop by the Michigan State Fair's Michigan Apple Pie Contest sometime.

Among this year's 17 entries were a rectangular apple pie, an upside-down apple pie, single-crust pies and double-crust pies, pies topped with streusel or nuts or crumbs, thin pies and double-deep ones, one made like a stuffed pizza and another whose crust framed a map of Michigan.

Creativity counted: The rules gave up to 10 points each for appearance and originality.

Crust was worth 30 points. A good crust should be flaky, have good color ...
