Study shows birth weight's broad impact
Academic effects dramatic for those below 5 1/2 pounds

Babies born weighing less than 5 1/2 pounds are almost four times
less likely to graduate from high school by age 19 than their normal
birth weight siblings, according to a study in the June issue of
American Sociological Review.
The findings of the study, apparently the first to follow low
birth weight children to age 19, are far more dramatic than the
academic problems documented in previous studies tracking children
for fewer years.
