The latest album from Pansy Division, "Absurd Pop Song
Romance," begins with an uncharacteristically lively and engaging
song. "February 17," however, is one of only two numbers on the disc
that were written solely by bassist Chris Freeman. Most of the 14
tunes are primarily the responsibility of the "queercore" band's
singer-guitarist, Jon Ginoli, whose new material is less sexually
explicit than before but just as clunky as ever.
Officially, Ginoli proves that some gay men prefer the Ramones
to Barbra Streisand. Thanks to producer Steve Albini and new
guitarist Patrick Goodwin, this album is agreeably noisy. Still,
such Ginoli songs as "Better Off Just Friends" and "Tinted Windows" ...
