Blue chips rise on Fed news; tech stocks mixed

New York -- Blue-chip stocks rose Tuesday after the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged, indicating that inflation fears are moderating. Technology stocks were mixed, with computer shares up and telecommunications issues down, partly on worries of slowing corporate profits.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 59.34, to 11,139.15.

The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 5.06, to 3958.21, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 1.35, to 1498.13. The Russell 2000 Index of smaller companies was up 1.01 at 517.46.

Advancing issues slightly outnumbered decliners on the New York Stock Exchange.
