Hot-stove league: Free agents keep NBA abuzz

George Karl must have known what lay ahead as the National
Basketball Association embarked on its so-called "negotiation period"
for free agents earlier this month.
"I have no idea why we do this to ourselves," the Milwaukee Bucks'
coach said. "Create a month of nervousness and hell."
And that was before the free-agent frenzy really got going.
It was before teams were wining and dining free agents in an
attempt to get an oral commitment for next season; before agents
matched one team's wits against another; before the owners really
