Nursing homes are ailing, Clinton says

Lack of workers endangers patients, he says, proposing $1 billion in assistance

Washington -- Nursing homes are so understaffed that many patients are endangered, President Clinton said Saturday, and he asked Congress to provide more money to homes so they could hire and train more nurses and aides.

The proposal comes in response to pressure from members of Congress, especially U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Special Committee on Aging.
