County OKs jail population policy

More prisoners would be on electronic surveillance

Fewer prisoners behind bars and more at home on electronic surveillance will be the result of a new jail population policy approved by the County Board Thursday.

Designed to resolve the intractable problem of overcrowding in the jail and House of Correction, the resolution directs that hundreds of prisoners will be released from the facilities to community programs when the numbers of inmates exceed certain levels.
