State prison population rises 2%

Madison -- The Wisconsin prison population increased 2% this year, the smallest growth in at least a decade, officials said.

The population, including inmates being held in other states, increased by 408 offenders to 20,599 as of last Friday. Last year, the population grew 12%, and in 1998, it increased 21%, according to the Department of Corrections.
