Here's how calendar really works

The 21st century and third millennium will begin on Jan. 1, 2001.
Celebrations to welcome them in 24 time zones around the world on New
Year's Eve, Dec. 31, 1999, did not alter that fact.
At the beginning of 1997, the misconception that the next century
and once-in-our-lifetime new millennium would begin with 2000 started
to spread around the world.
Those who understood how and why the Gregorian calendar measures
and records the passage of time universally cautioned that was wrong.
