1.7% of college women raped, study suggests

Washington -- The Justice Department estimated Friday that 1.7% of U.S. college women were raped during the 1996-'97 school year and another 1.1% were victims of attempted rape.

The report also estimated that 13% of college women had been stalked at school that year, a much higher figure than an earlier private study had found among women of all ages.

At Congress' request, the department's National Institute of Justice and its Bureau of Justice Statistics conducted two telephone surveys of 4,445 and 4,432 women who were enrolled in college at the start of the fall semester in 1996. The ...
